Very nice cookbook, tasty recipes, but some of the recipes lack a bit of practical detail. For example, one recipe called for 8 day old bread rolls - which equals how much dry bread? 1 cup, 2 cups? I wanted to use a loaf of dry bread instead - how I do figure out what amount equates to 8 bread rolls? It does make a difference, as then we are told to add 1 cup of warm milk to soften the bread. So I added one cup of milk, but the bread was still hard. Or to add 1/2 bunch of flat parsley, chopped? What is sold as a bunch of parsley at my store may be more or less than at your store! That being said, it is like learning to cook with your wonderful grandma, who would add a bit of this and lots of that, and cook it 'until it is ready'! Even so, what I have tried so far has been very tasty, once I played around with the measurements. For their second edition, the authors might want to consider adding a bit more specificity to some of the recipes, since we don't have a German grandma sitting beside us to tell us that is enough of this and that! I love the format overa, with bios and photos of the grandmas too, and look forward to trying out more of the recipes too.
I'm German and was looking for a gift for my American friend who loves to cook. She asked me a couple of times for German dishes and I always had problems with the translation. So here we are.. in my opinion it's a great book with authentic meals. You won't do anything wrong with this cookbook!
A superb book that preserves our German heritage before it wanes. One trivial criticism; the book contains no recipe for goose, a holiday standard. A word about Spanferkel would help too. Nonetheless, destined to be a classic if not so already.
I love this cookbook! I bought one and then bought four more to give to all the German "Grandmas" in my family. The pictures are lovely (I am a visual learner so I need a picture of whatever it is I am making), the stories and background were interesting and fun to read, and best of all, the recipes are delicious and easy enough for anyone to follow. This is German cooking for everyone, including the two vegetarians in the family.
Beautiful quality book, with great recipes! Want to try something new but not be overwhelmed check out this book. I use this book all the time and would definitely recommend it! Recipes are simple to understand and turn out great every time. Also great for beginner cooks like me who are very visual.
If you are looking for a German cookbook, this might be just what you're looking for. There are a lot of authentic, traditional recipes--NOT Americanized. Some of the recipes are from three, four generations back. There are all the German recipes you expect, plus many that you may not be familiar with. There are some old-time techniques also, and that makes for some very interesting times in the kitchen. These are old-time gourmet recipes, NOT new and innovative takes on traditional German food.Besides the authors sharing so many old and very authentic recipes, here are some things I liked about the cookbook: Great pictures of every recipe, very vibrant colors; information on where the recipes originated; interesting stories associated with many of the recipes; most everything is "from scratch" (you won't see any canned goods in the ingredient lists, except maybe a store-bought fresh pasta or bouillon cubes here or there), and I really appreciated the terrific (though few) fruit and veggie jams, butters and pickles.What I didn't like and why I knocked it down a star: It has a very poor index--such a shame. Also, the authors' writing is a bit "home-grown" and in no way sophisticated.I'm still very happy to have this book in my collection. The old recipes are very special, and I greatly appreciate the authors sharing them.
Wonderful cookbook with lots of great photographs and easy to follow recipes. If you are looking to make authentic German dishes, this is the book that you'll want!
