Just a warning. There is NO CD that comes with this version. I wanted a CD so I could listen in the car and did not see the little print on the photo of the book that says "listen to audio tracks online". So there is no physical CD like the last version had, you have to be able to access the web, when you need to listen to the audio. For a student with limited time, I would have rather had an CD.
I love whatever David Pogue writes. From all the computer stuff I used to read in the 1990's to this great marvel of a book, very nicely informative and smooth to the... ear! (only now you have to download the music and there is no CD accompanying it. Then again, who drives a car with an actual CD player anymore...) This is a sequel - so to speak - to the Opera for Dummies, published in the late 1990's/early 2000's, which, as a computer nerd knowing David Pogue from his computer nerdish writing, I thought it was a manual for the browser Opera, new on the scene in 1998! Boy! Was I in for a treat! Opera amateur (amatrice?) myself, that book turned me into a passionate aficionado. And this one now, helps me be a better listener of the KDFC Classical San Fran whose app is always running on my phone or computer. Thanks David Pogue for endless hours of informed entertainment both for your computer nerd self and your music scholar persona!
I have always enjoyed David Pogue's work, but thie bI have always enjoyed Mr.Pogue's work, but with book he is trying too hard to get laughs. He is a witty and intelligent writer,he does not need to resort to hammy, silly jibes. He assumes that people enjoy dumb levity, once or twice maybe, but not on a constant basis. A shame really,in between the silliness, there is some useful information to be gleaned. Perhaps he should consider rewriting the book, cut out the silly unfunny jokes and write clear and erudite prose, which he has been doing elsewhere for years!
I had the good fortune to take an adult education course (5 90-minute sessions) in Understanding Opera. A marvelous maestro/instructor opened a whole new world for me! This book is perfect for supplementing that instruction - and helping me develop and ENJOY this aspect of music. It's a wonderful reference - and allows you to pick and choose what you want to focus on learning....you don't have to read one chapter right after another.I now look forward to reading the music/arts section of the New York Times and actually UNDERSTAND what's going on!! This book is helping me increase my appreciation and enjoyment of a nice "slice of life."
This book is has great information that is well presented to give the reader a good foundation for demystifying classical music. The included CD and recommended listening for various composers are very useful. My only gripe is the never ending dumb jokes which stop being funny very quickly and them becomes extremely annoying. Did the authors get paid by the number of words because the jokes/wise cracks start to become something you anticipate in just about every paragraph - none of my other Dummy books are even close to this bad with the humor. Aside from that ongoing annoyance the information itself is excellent and so I do recommend it. Just beware of this shortcoming you will find a treasure trove of good stuff.I would gladly pay a little more for a revised edition that removes out 100 pages of painful and unnecessary humor as that would be much easier to read. 5 stars for information - 3 start for writing style.
Somehow, in earning 3 degrees.....I overlooked music.....and learning about it. So this is perfect for a "late bloomer" who enjoys music and wants to learn both quickly and conveniently about the inner workings of it all.The book is well written and easily understood.....I now find myself "listening" for certain elements....because I read about something specific in this book. It's helpful, and a wonderful reference when I have questions, or seek specific information about a piece of music. I expect to use it as a reference, forever!
Amazing!!! Spent my life in math and science. Realized how uncultured I was and started exploring the arts. I never played an instrument in my life, been to a musical, ballet or opera. I was starting from scratch and this book was so engaging. I thought it would be one of those things where I'd start it, but lack the attention span to finish, but he really makes it so easy to follow. I have greater appreciation for shows in general. This book was written in 1997, you have to laugh when he tells you how to get tickets by mail or go to the box office to look at seating chart; we are so lucky to have modern day advances!
If you're looking for a serious commentary on opera, this isn't it. But if you want a basic introduction, this is the best book I've found. It's fine for absolute beginners, and also for people who know a thing or two but would like to brush up - or just be entertained a little. The humor can be a little corny at times, but poking a little good-natured fun at some of the more serious operas is a good thing, really. Most program notes take themselves and the opera deadly seriously won't point out the absurdity of some of the plot points or other things modern audiences usually have trouble with. Without this kind of intro, newcomers might find themselves wondering if they're the only who thinks it's weird that (for example) a teenage girl is singing to and kissing a severed head.Although I enjoyed reading it through the first time, I have gone back to its summary of the "50 Big Kahunas" and "Best of the Rest" (for a total of 74 operas) again and again. It's a handy guide when deciding what operas you might be interested in seeing (or renting a DVD of). And if you know you are going to be seeing a particular opera, a quick read of the entry on that opera is a good idea too. It's good to know in advance some of the high points or oddities of what you're about to see, so you can be prepared. If a clown is going to be stabbing people, or several of the men are going to be singing like women, you'll want to know about it beforehand.
